Lagos, Nigeria, was the place to be on Monday, December 23, with Afrobeat’s biggest stars, Tyla, Tems, and Ayra Starr, being spotted together at OBI’S HOUSE, lighting up the night with their shared energy and camaraderie. The sight of three of the genre’s most prominent voices in one space quickly became a social media sensation.

Earlier that day, Tyla took the stage at Flytime Fest, delivering a dynamic performance of “Jump” alongside Gunna. Tems, fresh from completing her acclaimed “Born in the Wild Tour” just weeks prior, joined Ayra Starr and Tyla for an evening of celebration. A viral clip from the event captured the trio dancing together, radiating joy and unity.

Fans immediately called for a collaboration between the artists, praising their solidarity in an industry often plagued by comparisons. One Twitter user wrote, “It’s amazing to see Tyla, Ayra, and Tems hanging out, supporting each other, and ignoring the internet’s attempts to create rivalry.” Another fan shared their excitement, posting, “Every video of Tyla, Tems, and Ayra is giving life!”

This moment capped off an extraordinary year for the three artists and for Afrobeats as a whole. In May, Ayra Starr released The Year I Turned 21, featuring standout tracks like “Last Heartbreak Song” with Giveon and “Commas.” The project also included collaborations with Asake, Coco Jones, and Anitta, further cementing her status as a global star.

Tems made waves in June with her long-awaited debut album, Born in the Wild. The record showcased her introspective songwriting and featured notable contributions from J. Cole on “Free Fall” and Asake on the infectious “Get It Right.” Familiar tracks like “Forever” and her modern take on Seyi Sodimu’s classic “Love Me JeJe” also highlighted the album’s rich texture.

Tyla added to her remarkable year by dropping a deluxe version of her self-titled album in October. It featured hits like the TikTok sensation “PUSH 2 START,” “BACK to YOU,” and “SHAKE AH,” with collaborations from Tony Duardo and Optimist Music ZA. She debuted “PUSH 2 START” live at the 2024 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, further expanding her global reach.

Interestingly, the original TYLA album marked the first collaboration between Tyla and Tems on “No. 1,” a track praised for its emotive depth. Reflecting on Tems’ influence, Tyla told NPR, “She’s the blueprint for our generation. She’s been breaking barriers and creating opportunities for so many of us.”

This unexpected reunion in Lagos stands as a testament to the power and unity driving Afrobeats forward, with these artists leading the charge into an even brighter future.
