T.I. has made headlines after making comments about accompanying his daughter, Deyjah Harris, to her GYN appointments to do hymen checks.

Although he has since apologized on an episode of Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk, that hasn’t stopped two New York-based politicians from wanting to ban the examination altogether.

State Senator Roxanne Persaud and assemblywoman Michaelle Solages have introduced new legislation that would make the “virginity examinations” a felony. Complex reports the two women have called the procedure unscientific and abusive. “These examinations are not only a violation of women’s and girls’ human rights, but in cases of rape, can cause additional pain and mimic the original act of sexual violence, leading to re-experience, re-traumatization and re-victimization.”

If the legislation goes into effect, doctors who conduct this procedure could face professional misconduct penalties and a sexual abuse charge as a first-degree felony.
