Tory Lanez recently paid tribute to legendary rapper Trina while announcing the re-release of his mixtape. Making a name in the music industry is no easy feat, and for Lanez, the journey was filled with challenges. About a decade ago, the Canadian rapper faced serious financial struggles. He was forced to sleep in his ex-girlfriend’s car and crash on his manager’s couch after the breakup. However, his luck changed when Trina stepped in to help.

In an inspirational Instagram post, Tory shared how Trina’s support was pivotal in his early career. “I remember showing her the song for ‘Godfather’. She looked at me and said, ‘That’s the song that’s going to get you a deal’. She put five bands up and helped me get the video shot,” he recalled. The same director who filmed that video also shot another for free—”Henny in Hand.” Just two months later, Interscope saw both videos and was impressed, which led to Tory’s first major record deal and the subsequent re-release of his music. “The rest was history,” Tory said.

Thanks to Trina’s belief in him, Lanez was able to refine his sound and brand, ultimately propelling him to stardom. Now, a decade later, Tory is doing a re-release for the mixtape that featured those pivotal tracks, Lost Cause, on October 1, marking the project’s 10th anniversary. Lanez also revealed plans to reissue more of his classic mixtapes. “This will be the first of many classic mixtapes of mine that I will officially release on DSPs now that I am INDEPENDENT!!!☂️,” he announced.
