A Nevada grand jury indicted former gang leader, Duane, “Keefe D” Davis, 60, on Friday (September 29) for Tupac Shakur’s murder.
Jada Pinkett Smith, who was reportedly close in high school with the late icon, shared a few words on social media. In an Instagram post, she wrote, “Now I hope we can get some answers and have some closure. R.I.P. Pac.”
Over the years, she’s said during interviews that one of her “biggest regrets” in her life is not telling the “California Love” rapper how she truly felt for him. Last week, she shared a throwback video with him.
2Pac’s sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, released a statement and called the moment “pivotal,” and a “victory,” but “reserved judgment” until legal proceedings were complete, BBC reports. She continued:
“It’s important to me that the world, the country, the justice system, and our people acknowledge the gravity of the passing of this man, my brother, my mother’s son, my father’s son.” She ended the message with,
“There have been multiple hands involved and there remains so much surrounding the life and death of my brother Tupac and our Shakur family overall. We are seeking real justice, on all fronts.”
CNN reports, Mopreme Shakur, Tupac’s step-brother, said “The charging of Mr Davis was bittersweet.”
“We have been through decades of pain. “They have known about this guy, who been running his mouth, for years. So why now? For us, this is not over. We want to know why, and if there were any accomplices,” he told the news outlet.
Authorities say Keefe D planned the deadly attack after his nephew got into an altercation with Tupac at a casino. Tupac was shot multiple times on Sept. 7, 1996, in a drive-by shooting after stopping at a red light near the Vegas strip.
Mr. Davis will appear in court in a few days, more details to come.
