Tyler, The Creator rips today’s hip hop stars who make meme raps in a new interview with Maverick Carter.
“I love this art form so much, bro, and there’s so many n***as out right now that aren’t musicians that are getting treated like musicians ’cause they make meme records,” said Tyler in the trailer for Mavericks.
He has produced, recorded, and arranged his recent albums himself, with two of them earning Grammy awards for best rap albums, IGOR and Call Me If You Get Lost. While making the album, Tyler released footage of learning new instruments.
Before expressing his love for music, Tyler disclosed that he did not want to appear hateful because of his skills. “I don’t wanna seem like a hater. Sometimes I have hater energy ’cause I just think I’m that good,” he tells Mav Carter.
Refraining from name-dropping, Tyler, The Creator, continued to express his frustration, mentioning that many of today’s rap stars merely desire to make money from music rather than create art. “Publicly, they’ll be like, ‘I don’t give a fuck about music. I just do this shit for money,’” he said. “It’s the Spider-Man meme of the next n***a when every publication is like, ‘Hell yeah, let’s put that out!’ You’re taking up space from n***as like me.”
Tyler regularly discusses criticizing artists who disrespect the music. In Big Sean’s album trailer, the two stars discuss lyricism as a superpower. At last year’s Camp Flog, Tyler mentioned his ego during his headlining performance.
“I do interviews and stuff and see folks like, ‘Oh, he has such a huge ego, he’s so full of himself,” he tells the crowd. “Hell f**king right I’m full of myself, n**ga, ’cause that’s how I feel about me, n**ga,’ the DOGTOOTH.’ I’m full of me because everything I said I wanted to do, I did. And I didn’t let anybody tell me nothing else. And I got a resume to back it up.”
