Tyler The Creator’s planned performance at Mexico City’s Axe Ceremonia festival this past Sunday was tragically canceled after a heartbreaking incident. The festival was forced to halt all performances after a crane, carrying a large decoration, toppled due to strong winds on April 5th. The accident killed two individuals, photographers Miguel Angel Rojas (26) and Berenice Giles (28), who were struck by the falling equipment. Both were rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to their injuries.
Axe Ceremonia organizers confirmed the deaths in a statement: “With deep sadness, we confirm the passing of the two people who were injured during today’s incident. We are deeply heartbroken by this loss.” They also expressed their commitment to supporting the families of the victims and maintaining transparency with authorities during the investigation.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences, stating, “We regret and send our solidarity to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. An investigation needs to be carried out… there should be no impunity in this case.” Prosecutor Bertha Alcalde Luján echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of justice and safety at events like these: “It is very important that a case like this not go unpunished.”
Tyler The Creator, along with other performers such as Charli XCX, FKA Twigs, Gesaffelstein, and Lil Yachty, was scheduled to take the stage, but the tragic incident overshadowed the weekend’s events. Tyler’s “CHROMAKOPIA World Tour” will resume on April 25th in Antwerp, Belgium.
