Wale is giving J. Cole credit for helping him overcome a tough period of writer’s block. The Washington, D.C. rapper recently opened up on social media about his creative struggles and how Cole stepped in to support him.
“Music friends .. how do yall cure writers block ….over the years I’ve had different methods. Curious what yall do,” Wale wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He followed up by sharing, “I done talked to Cole bout the block a rack of times .. one time we try teach me how to meditate.. it worked a lil .. we made ‘my boy’ right after,” referencing their 2018 track “My Boy (Freestyle).”
Wale and J. Cole have had a complicated relationship. They first collaborated back in 2009 on “Rather Be With You” and “Beautiful Bliss,” and were close early in their careers. However, things shifted in 2016 when Cole dropped “False Prophets,” a song that seemed to take shots at Wale. “I got a homie, he a rapper and he wanna win bad … And I know he so bitter he can’t see his own blessings,” Cole rapped.
Just two days later, Wale responded with “Groundhog Day,” where he rapped, “I remember me and Cole would open for Hov … I ain’t make it on Blueprint, so made me a blueprint.”
Despite their past tension, the two rappers later reunited for “My Boy (Freestyle)” and again in 2021 for “Poke It Out” from Wale’s album Folarin 2. On that track, Cole acknowledged their renewed bond with the line, “Cole World and Folarin co-starrin’ / We both flexin’, Bo Jacksons, bogartin.’”
Their history is full of competitive energy, but also mutual respect and creative chemistry that continues to evolve.
