In 2017, the City Girls took the world by storm with raunchy lyrics and a fiery, Miami flavor almost reminiscent of Trina. However, after seven years, one mixtape, and three studio albums, their reign in the rap game has ended. In recent interviews both Yung Miami and JT have opened up about what they believe led to the separation. JT revealed to Complex, that the breakup was a mutual decision. The “Okay” rapper said, “It just made sense for us and it was no hard feelings.”
Despite embarking on a solo career, JT says she’ll always be a City Girl: “I’m like Tina Turner, I’m still a City Girl. I need my name. That’s the biggest thing about me, I can’t ever get away from being a City Girl.” JT adds, “But I feel like it just made so much sense for both of us in the direction that we was going and things that we were focusing on. It wasn’t no hard feelings about it, we saw it coming.”
Yung Miami decided to address the situation via her Caresha Please podcast. She also recruited long-time friend, Saucy Santana to join her. Similar to JT, Yung Miami reveals the two had just grown apart: “She was in L.A., I was in Miami. Every time we tried to get together, it just didn’t hit.” She continues: “We was in two different head spaces…”The way we dressed was different. Whenever we tried to get together, it just didn’t connect.”
The estranged friendship became even more evident while on tour. The rapper revealed the girls not only traveled separately but also, had separate dressing rooms. “When we’d be on tour, she got her own dressing room, I got my own dressing room.” Yung Miami continues: “[JT’s] riding with her own glam team, I’m riding with my own glam team. When we get on the stage and do our routine, that was probably the only interaction we had.”
