While promoting his new film, Fight Night, popular film producer Will Packer updated Hot 97 on the anticipated sequel to the 2017 comedy Girls Trip.
In response to questions from Ebro and co-hosts Laura Stylez and Peter Rosenberg, Packer, 50, confirmed that the upcoming film is still in production. “We here, it’s happening – like real talk – it’s happening,” Packer said to Rosenberg at 26:48. “Listen, man, it’s like the marathon. I have to do it at my own pace and you and Ebro are not going to pressure me to lock into a particular time to get it across the finish line.”
Girls Trip, directed by Malcolm D. Lee, stars Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Queen Latifah. The film follows a group reconnecting on an insane vacation to New Orleans. In 2017, the Kenya Barris-written comedy made $140 million at the box office.
Will Packer would clarify the sequel’s status after Rosenberg said television reported that the next film is in pre-production. In the response, Packer confirmed that everyone in the original group is set to return.
“We’re not in pre-production,” Will replied. “We’re in the script phase. We are absolutely, myself, Malcolm Lee, the director, Kenya Barris, Tracy Oliver, incredible writing team. Ladies are lined up. The ladies are ready. I’m not doing it without everyone coming back.”
The producer didn’t reveal the sequel’s plot but guaranteed the same type of calamities from the original are expected to ensue. Girls Trip was a breakout role for Tiffany Haddish.
Along with the news on Girls Trip 2, Packer discussed experiencing many firsts this year, the current media landscape, and more. Watch the full interview with Ebro in the Morning below.
