Will Smith completes his return to hip-hop with a new independent record deal under SLANG.
After his performance at the BET Awards, the award-winning entertainer signed with the independent label led by music executive Rene McLean, McLean is also a partner and founding advisor of Influence Media Partners. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.
Smith joins an exciting roster, including Grammy-winning producer Camper, chart-topping producer 30 Roc, emerging rap star Leaf, hip hop duo The Underachievers, and underground star RY XP. “In a rapidly changing music industry, SLANG artists will be supported by a team of strategists dedicated to advancing their careers and achieving their goals,” said McLean. “Our commitment to culture comes first, and we consider our SLANG roster family.”
The Sunday Service Choir and R&B singer Friday performed Smith’s inspirational song “You Can Make It” at the BET Awards on June 30. Kirk Franklin provided gospel music during the performance, marked by rain.
Smith offered encouragement: “Nobody gets an easy ride. We all have a cross to bear, but there’s wisdom in the fire, and every moment is an opportunity. Embrace the journey.”
Smith first entered the music scene in 1987 as part of the rap duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, achieving success with hits like “Summertime” and “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” which won the first-ever rap Grammy in 1989. Going solo, Smith topped the charts with hits like “Wild Wild West” and “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It,” earning another Grammy.
Lost and Found, his last album, was released in 2005. He has recently been featured on songs by Marc Anthony, Nicky Jam, Joyner Lucas, Bomba Estéreo, and his son, Jaden Smith.
Smith also collaborated with Sean Paul on the soundtrack for the blockbuster movie Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
