In light of the news, detained Florida rapper YNW Melly has filed a lawsuit against the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. Michael Pizzi Jr., Melly’s attorney, held a press conference on Monday (Nov. 4) with the recording artist’s mother and brother to discuss the new lawsuit and deliver a message to the “Mischief On My Mind” hitmaker.

Since surrendering himself to law enforcement in 2019, the 25-year-old artist, real name Jamell Demons, has been in Broward County Jail for five years, accused of killing best friends Anthony Williams, known as YNW Sakchaser, and Christopher Thomas Jr., known as YNW Juvy. The lawsuit claims Melly has been without communication or visits by anyone for three years. Melly’s release is sought immediately over “constitutional safeguards” in the lawsuit filed against BSO 17th Sheriff Gregory Tony and the department. Michael Pizzi Jr told media outlets he cannot communicate with his client without restrictions.

“They’re trying to break him down and get a result that they cannot get in the court system,” said Melly’s attorney. “They are trying to wear him down mentally by not letting him even talk or visit with his mother or his brother…”

Constantly worried about her son’s well-being, Melly’s mother, Jamie King, shared a message to her son. She said: “Jamell, if you watch this today, I just want you to know that I love you. I’m going to continue fighting for you and I just want to know that you’re okay,” King said. “I just want to hear your voice and see your face. And, I’m going to get you home.”

B Slime, YNW Melly’s brother and recording artist, shared a heartfelt message addressing his older brother:  “We’re working endless nights and endless days to get your home and at least just get your phone calls back,” his brother said. “I miss you very much.”

On Monday, Broward Sheriff’s Offices issued an official statement about Melly’s claims of detainment. It reads:

“The Broward Sheriff’s Office does not generally comment on pending litigation. However, the jail does not utilize ‘solitary confinement.’ Rather, Mr. Demons has been placed on administrative segregation, which is a classification resulting in an alternate living assignment for an inmate whose placement in the general population poses a serious threat to the safety of staff or inmates, or life and property.”

Demons’ case is set for a retrial on September 10, 2025, at Broward County Court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The rap star is also involved in two wrongful death lawsuits and a witness tampering case. The cases also include co-defendant Cortlen Henry, better known as YNW Bortlen.
