On Sunday (July 29), Your Old Droog posted to X that JID, a popular Dreamville recording artist, declined to appear on his new album, Movie, with a 10k fee, while Denzel Curry accepted the feature request for free. YOD shared that JID was asked to appear on the album’s hit single “DBZ,” which features Method Man, Denzel Curry, and Madlib.
“Offered JID 10k to get on DBZ,” tweeted Your Old Droog. “He declined and then Denzel Curry did it for free.”
JID hasn’t responded to the tweet at press time. Fans commented on the tweet with one user saying, “I’d love to hear JID on it, but it’s a blessing in disguise,” while another said, “That’s wild when you realize he did that MGK/trippie album.”
Movie is YOD’s ninth studio album, his first since 2021’s Space Bar. The album includes production by Just Blaze, Harry Fraud, and Madlib. Yasin Bey, formerly Mos Def, is also featured on the bonus track “Care Plan.”
The album, which was released on June 27, has received rave reviews. With 18 tracks, the Brooklyn rapper channels cinematic autobiography, resulting in a mix of formulaic and genuine emotional complexity.
Your Old Droog’s resume includes collaborations with Black Thought, Conductor Williams, MF Doom, and Westside Gunn. He opened for DJ Premier and Royce Da 5’9″ on their PRhyme tour.
JID fans have patiently awaited his upcoming fourth album, Forever & A Day, which received an update from the rap star’s manager, Barry Hefner, on July 24. Top Dawg Entertainment President Punch advised Hefner to hold back the album to ensure its success on social media. Hefner replied to the advice with, “TDE always holding their artists back from being successful.. If this what holding the album back looks like ain’t shit coming out over here.”
