Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam music event has been a platform for creating some of hip-hop’s most significant moments throughout its 50-year history.
One such moment, etched in the memories of hip-hop enthusiasts, occurred in 2012. Nas, the iconic Queens Bridge native, surprised the sold-out MetLife Stadium by bringing out Lauryn Hill ,48, to perform their classic “If I Ruled The World.”
This unexpected reunion was a nostalgic reminder of their past collaborations and impact on the hip-hop scene. Lauryn Hill’s 2012 appearances were rare due to her hiatus.
Nas brought out L-Boogie with the intention of bringing back traditional hip-hop. Upon her surprise walk-out, he yells, “We came to bring that real in this muthaf*cka.”
Before performing their classic, Hill excited the crowd with the opening line to her hit song, “Lost Ones.” “It’s funny how money changes a situation / Miscommunication leads to complication,” raps Hill.
The moment continues to receive rave reviews years later on Hot 97’s YouTube channel. One user wrote, “Shout out to Empress Lauryn Hill!!!!! She will NEVER go out of style!!!” while another said, “Nas & Lauryn are LEGENDS!”
Featured on the Queens Bridge native’s sophomore album, It Was Written, the hit collaboration includes a sample from the Whodini and Kurtis Blow hit, also called “If I Ruled The World.” The Nas hit was released in 1996 on Columbia Records.
According to her son and popular new recording artist YG Marley, a long-awaited Lauryn Hill sophomore album is rumored to be in the works. The buzz and excitement around this potential album, marking Hill’s first in 25 years following the iconic debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, is palpable.
Nas, the 50-year-old recording artist, has been a consistent force in the music industry. He has released new music, including multiple trilogy projects with super producer Hit-Boy, showcasing his versatility and creativity. In addition to his music, Nas has also ventured into the world of business, becoming a successful venture capitalist, a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and foresight.
