On Thursday, Florida’s Capitol hosted a moving gathering where both Democrats and Republicans came together to honor the late Democratic state Senator Geraldine Thompson.

The revered educator, civil rights leader, and dedicated legislator passed away on February 13 at the age of 76 due to complications from knee-replacement surgery. Thompson’s family, including her husband, sat at her desk on the Senate floor, which was adorned with white roses and draped in black cloth. The room filled with solemnity as friends and colleagues gathered to pray, sing hymns, and share heartfelt stories, reflecting on her enduring legacy.

Thompson’s path to public service began as a staffer for Gwen Cherry, the first Black woman elected to the Florida Legislature. Over a career that spanned more than 15 years, she served in both the House and Senate, fiercely advocating for voting rights, the preservation of Black history, and against policies she believed were unjust. Notably, she stood against gerrymandering and the educational restrictions implemented by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, particularly those that limited discussions on Florida’s historical injustices.

Remembering Geraldine Thompson: A Legacy of Leadership and Empowerment

At the memorial, Democratic Senator Darryl Rouson praised Thompson’s legacy, quoting an African proverb: “When an elder dies, a library is burned to the ground.” He added, “We’ve lost one of our greatest libraries.”

Former President Barack Obama conveyed his condolences through a letter read by Senator Tracie Davis, calling Thompson “a model of the best kind of public service,” and noting her “trailblazing legacy” that would endure in the hearts of all those she inspired. Senator Rosalind Osgood recalled her first encounter with Thompson in 2000 before becoming a legislator herself. “Just seeing these Black women legislate, it was mesmerizing,” Osgood said, reflecting on how Thompson demonstrated the vital role Black women played in positions of power.

Thompson was a prominent leader within the Legislative Black Caucus and was often seen as the conscience of the Florida Senate. Her ability to command attention in debates was noted by Republican Senator Ed Hooper, who shared, “You know that when you’re debating, everybody might not be listening, except when Geraldine spoke.” Beyond her legislative accomplishments, Thompson was deeply involved in education and community leadership. She founded the Wells’Built Museum of African American History and Culture in Orlando and advocated for the creation of a state museum dedicated to African American history. Her presentations, often in costume as historical Black figures, captivated her colleagues and brought history to life in a meaningful way.

Republican Senator Don Gaetz shared a fond memory of Thompson’s portrayal of pioneering aviator Bessie Coleman. “I didn’t know the story. I didn’t know it until she told it in the first person,” Gaetz recalled. “And I can tell you that I believed Geraldine Thompson could fly. And I still do.” Thompson’s legacy extends beyond political achievements to her lasting impact on education, culture, and the pursuit of justice. Her commitment to equality and advocacy will continue to inspire future generations of leaders, ensuring her remarkable life and work are never forgotten.
